Species
Four species,
sanded to your sheen.
Red Oak
The Chicago standard — warm, open grain, takes stain evenly. Most-stocked unfinished species.
White Oak
Tighter grain, cooler tone, harder wearing. The spec for wide-plank and rift/quarter-sawn looks.
Maple
Pale, smooth, minimal grain. Modern interiors and sport-floor refinishes.
Hickory
Hardest domestic species, dramatic color range. Rustic and high-traffic jobs.
Mill grades
Four grades,
finest to most character.
Mill grade controls knots, board length and color consistency — not durability. Select & Better turns over fastest; Common #2 and #3 are call-ahead. We stock Select & Better and Common #1; the rest comes in on order.
- 01
Select & Better
Top grade — minimal knots, longest boards, most consistent color.
Highest turnover · usually in stock
- 02
Common #1
Light character — small knots, some color variation.
Strong stock · 1–2 day pickup
- 03
Common #2
More character — visible knots, mineral streaks, color range.
Stocked but lower volume · call ahead
- 04
Common #3
Rustic / cabin grade — heavy character, large knots OK for distress.
Special order — 1–2 weeks
